Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Master the Art of Cognitive Restructuring

Evidence-Based Tools for Rapid Change

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the gold standard for treating anxiety, depression, and behavioural disorders. It is the primary modality recommended by the NHS and mental health bodies worldwide.

The LSCCH UK Certificate in CBT offers a rigorous, practical training in the principles of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). Unlike "passive" therapies, this course teaches you to be an active, directive agent of change. You will learn how to identify the "Unhealthy Beliefs" driving your client's distress and vigorously dispute them, replacing them with rational, life-enhancing alternatives.

The Outcome: You will gain a structured, evidence-based framework to treat clients who are "stuck" in negative thinking loops.

Why Train in REBT-CBT?

While standard CBT focuses on symptom relief, REBT (founded by Dr Albert Ellis) focuses on profound philosophical change.

  • Emotional Responsibility: Learn to teach clients that events don't cause feelings; beliefs about events cause feelings.

  • Philosophical Depth: REBT helps clients accept themselves unconditionally, not just "fix" a specific behaviour.

  • Structure: Gain a clear roadmap (ABCDE Model) for every session, ensuring you never feel lost with a client.

  • Professional Growth: This qualification counts towards the Advanced Practitioner Diploma (APDIP).

Course Syllabus: What You Will Master

This specialist training is conducted over 4 comprehensive modules. It moves from the core ABC model to advanced case conceptualisation.

Module 1: Foundations & The ABCDE Model

  • The Mechanics: Understanding the Simple ABC Model (Activating Event, Belief, Consequence).

  • The Diagnosis: Distinguishing between Healthy and Unhealthy Negative Emotions (e.g., Sadness vs Depression).

  • The Interaction: The Principle of Psychological Interactionism—how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours loop.

  • The Structure: How to conduct The First Session, handle initial assessments, and teach the ABCDE model to clients.

  • Homework: Using the Structured CBT Reflective Diary to drive change between sessions.

Module 2: Assessment & Goal Setting

  • Advanced Assessment: Assessing the ‘C’ (Consequence) and the ‘A’ (Trigger) with precision.

  • Meta-Emotions: Dealing with clients who feel "bad about feeling bad" (e.g., anxiety about anxiety).

  • The Core Roots: Identifying the Twelve Core Irrational Beliefs (Demands, Awfulizing, Low Frustration Tolerance).

  • Ambivalence: Techniques for Dealing With Ambivalence and gaining a firm commitment to change.

Module 3: Disputing & Integration

  • The Change Mechanism: Disputing Beliefs—using logic, empiricism, and pragmatism to shatter unhealthy thoughts.

  • Persuasion: Using Persuasive Arguments and Rational-Irrational Dialogues to shift perspective.

  • Imagery: Mastering Rational Emotive Imagery (REI) to rehearse new emotional responses.

  • Overcoming Resistance: Dealing with obstacles in client progress and integrating healthy beliefs into daily life.

The Power of Integration: CBT & Hypnosis

At the LSCCH UK, we believe that CBT and Clinical Hypnosis are natural partners. This course includes a specific focus on how these modalities amplify each other.

Why Combine Them?

  • CBT provides the Cognitive Map. It identifies exactly what the client needs to change (the irrational belief).

  • Hypnosis provides the Emotional Engine. It allows the client to "feel" the new belief as true, rather than just understanding it intellectually.

By integrating the ABC Model with Trance, you create "Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy" (CBH). Research suggests that adding hypnosis to CBT can enhance treatment outcomes by up to 70%, particularly for anxiety and habit disorders. This course gives you the theoretical foundation to start this integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this certificate qualify me to practice as a CBT Therapist?

This course is a Certificate course. If you are already a qualified therapist (e.g., Clinical Hypnotherapist, Counsellor), this qualification allows you to market yourself as an "Integrative Therapist using CBT techniques" and obtain professional indemnity insurance for these skills.

If you are a complete beginner, this is an excellent foundational qualification, but you may need to pair it with a broader diploma (like our Practitioner Diploma) to open a private practice.

Why do you focus on REBT rather than "Standard" CBT?

While standard CBT focuses heavily on symptom relief, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) offers a deeper philosophical change. It teaches "Unconditional Self-Acceptance" rather than just positive thinking. Many therapists find REBT more robust for tackling deep-seated issues like shame and guilt, which is why we prioritise it in our syllabus.

I am a Hypnotherapist. Will this change how I work?

You will learn to use the "Cognitive Map" (ABCDE Model) to structure your hypnotherapy sessions. Instead of just giving suggestions for relaxation, you will be able to help clients actively dismantle the irrational beliefs driving their anxiety before you induce trance. This creates a powerful "dual-attack" on the issue.
